The ancient practice of Ayurveda is becoming more and more popular for those looking to promote balance and well-being in their lives. In part one of our series on the Ayurvedic principles, we focused on Vayu (or air), and in part two, we discussed Akasha (which means space or ether). In today’s post from True Nature Wellness in Sandusky, we’re focusing on Jala, or water. Keep reading to learn more.

Jala (Water): A Series on Each of the Ayurvedic Principles

The Sanskrit Word for Water
Jala is the Sanskrit word for water. Water is essential for life, and in the Ayurvedic tradition it is seen as a purifying and healing element. It is used to cleanse and detoxify the body, as well as to balance the other four principles. Perhaps most importantly, water provides basic nourishment that our bodies need, protecting against pain and inflammation.

Jala Is Linked to Akasha
Jala is closely linked to the element of space. It has cooling, calming, and soothing properties, which can help to create a sense of peace and relaxation in the body and mind.

Jala Is Calming and Nourishing
Interestingly, Jala is also associated with the sense of taste. Like other Ayurvedic principles, it has a flavor that is connected to it. Jala is particularly associated with a sweet taste, which can be nourishing and calming.

An Element of Balance
Jala is a balancing element, helping to keep the other four principles in check. It helps to keep the body in a state of equilibrium and can help to reduce stress and tension.
Jala is an important part of the Ayurvedic tradition, and understanding its properties and benefits can help to bring balance and health into our lives.
